Timber Cutting.—The prohibition as to the cutting of cypress pine timber has been removed.

A Government Gazette Extraordinary, published on Saturday last, notifies that his Excellency the Governor has bsenpleased to accept the resig nation of the hon. William Miles, Esq., as Secre tary for Publio Works, and as a member of the Executive Council of Queensland. It ia also notified that the hon. Bamuel Walker Griffith, Esq., Attorney-General and Secretary for Public Instruction, has been appointed Secretary for Publio Works. The following circular despatch, respecting the precedenoy of Executive Councillors after ceasing to hold office, is published in the Government Gazette of Saturday last:—" Downing-Btreet, October 24,1878.—Sir,—My attention has been directed to the fact that no place has been assigned in the order of precedency to such gen tlemen as, in consideration of the length of their service as members of the Executive Council, have received her Majesty's permission to retain the title of ' honorable' within the colony after their retirement from the Council. It is proper that a high position should be assigned to per sons on whom this privilege has been conferred, •nd I have to convey to you the Queen's pleasure that former members of the Executive Council, who have been permitted to bear the title of ' honorable' permanently within the colony, shall take precedence next after the actual members of the Executive Council, according to the dates at which they may have respectively become quali fied by length of service to retain the title.—l have, Ac, Kimbebley.—The Officer Administer ing the Government of Queensland." In accor dance with this despatch, Joshua Peter Bell, Esq.; John Douglas, Esq., C.M.G.; Thomas Lodge Murray-Prior, Esq.; John Malbon Thomp son, Esq.; William Henry Walsh, Esq.; George Thorn, Esq.; aud Bamuol Walker Griffith, Esq., nro granted permission to retain the title of " honorable" within this colony, and to continue to wear the uniform of an Executive Councillor. Mr. Morgan notifies his intention to stand for Warwick. Two more candidates announce themselves in the Ipswich papers for the repre sentation of West Moreton electorates—viz, Mr. J. Ferrett for Bundanba and Mr. F. Porter for lioaewood.

It is always gratifying (gays the S. M. Herald) to draw attention to tbo career of Australians in the service of their Queen and country. Kefer ring to the staff appointments made by Sir Garnot Wolsely on assuming the Government of the newly-acquired Island of Cyprus, the Whitehall Revicio says :—" The military appoint ment which has given most satisfaction is that of Lieutenant-Colonel Baker Kussell, C.8., aa Military Secretary. It was Colonel Kussell who raised and commanded 'Russell's Kegimont' on the Gold Coast. There are Home, however, who will regret to find the Colonel's name included in the list of Sir Garnet's stiff, lv the 13th Hussars great disappointment will bo felt, for there have long been hopes expressed among Mie officers of that gallant regiment that Baker Russell would eventually assume command, and there will be fears now lest his reappointment to the staff may interfere with his regimental ad vancement. I hope, for the sako of the service, that it may not, as we are hardly rich enough in cavalry officers to bo able to spare ono (if the character of Colonel Russell. In selecting Mr. Herbert, of the Colonial Oftico, to accompany him, Sir Garnet has given further ovidence of his wonderful capacity for putting the right mau in tbo right place." Colouel Kuasell U the second son of the late Captain William Russell, of Ravenswortb, Hunter River, and is a native of Sydney. He is also the grandson of the late Dr. Martin, of the 73rd Regiment, who waa well known and much respected both in {Sydney and Parramatta about sixty years ago. Mb. Jamks R.
