Our Public Works.

Public Works in Progress.

WE understand that contracts have been let for the following works: —Additions to the Lunatic Asylum, Woogaroo, to Mr. W. Cramb, for £1629 10s. ; erection of infant school in

connection with the Leichhardt-street State Schools, Brisbane, to Messrs. Southall and Tracey, for £530 ; primary school, Tiaro, to Mr. Henry Neale, for £300 ; primary school, Ingle-wood, to Messrs. Wallace and Gibson, for £230 ; additions to primary school, South Brisbane, to Mr. P. Nott, for £150; additions to primary school, Gowrie-road, to Messrs. Thackeray and Co., for £172 10s. ; children's hospital in connection with Diamantina Orphanage, to Mr. J. Brier, for £813 ; erecting pilot's cottage, Mackay, to Mr. A. M'lntyre, for £488 ; and pilot's cottage, Gatcombe Head, to Mr. C. Jensen, for £120 ; erection of morgue, Brisbane, but the site has not yet been definitely fixed; additions and repairs to Custom-house, Bundaberg, to Mr. Chattin, for £300. At Brisbane, fair progress is being made with the Supreme Court buildings. The roofs are being put on, and the external cementing is being done as far as possible. The slates for the roofing are daily expected to arrive from Eng land. Some difficulty has been experienced in getting them, and the roofing of the buildings, as well as the internal work, has been thereby delayed considerably ; but should they arrive shortly, as expected, the building will soon be finished, as the doors, sashes, and internal wood work are all ready for fixing. About nine nine months remain of the contract time, and there is at present no reason to apprehend that it will be exceeded by the contractor. The commencement of the new telegraph office, in Queen-street, adjoining the General Post Office, has been delayed for stone, but a large quantity is now ready at the quarry, and as soon as it gets down the building will be proceeded with rapidly. The wharf sheds, at Petrie's Bight, are making good progress—one is already completed and ready for use, and the other will be completed in from three to four weeks at most. Ihe quarantine build ings on Peel Island are about finished; and con siderable additions are being made to the Bene volent Asylum at Dunwich, which are far advanced towards completion. At Ipswich, the foundations of the new Works and Lands Offices have been laid, and the erec tion of the Benevolent Asylum is making fair progress. At Glen Esk and Veresdale, police stations have been erected at a cost of £230 each. At Toowoomba, the contractors are getting on with the new Law Courts, and progress is being made in cut stone-work, and the principal fronts of the building. At Drayton, the school is to have additions and improvements. . At Highfields, the new police buildings are within a few days of completion. At Jondaryan, the new police station has been completed. At Warwick, the additions to the post office are making progress, and will be finished in two or three weeks. At Nanango, the erection of a court-house has been commenced, for which Mr. Thomas Pryde is the contractor. At Surat, the new police buildings are advanc ing towards completion. At Condamine, the new lock-up and police court have just been completed. At Goondiwmdi, the new telegraph office has been finished. At Cunnamnila, the telegraph office is com pleted. At Gladstone, the new telegraph office U com pleted. At Rockhampton, the additions to the police barracks are well advanced towards completion. The new gaol, for which the contract has been let, has not yet been commenced, as the site has

not been definitely fixed. It is to be on Borne part of the Atbelatane Range, near the hospital. At Yaamba, a telegraph office is in course of erection. At Marlborough, considerable additions and repairs to the telegraph office are being carried out. At Westwood, the new telegraph office is nearly completed. At St. Lawrence, the aite for the new telegraph office has been decided on, and a contract let to Mr. Davis. At Mackay, the new poet office has been com pleted and occupied. Considerable repairs and improvements to the telegraph office are being carried out, and tenders are now invited for ad ditions to the lock-up, for which the amount voted is £500. At Townßville, the new court-house has been finished, and is now occupied. Exertions are being made to push on the erection of the gaol, which has been much hindered by the wet season, and the difficulty experienced in obtain ing a sufficient supply of good bricks. At Charters Towers, a new court-house is in progress. At Cairns, the new Customs building, and additions to be used as a court-house, are now completed. At Cooktown, the erection of a residence for the Sub-Collector of Customs has been begun. New Bchool buildings are being erected (or completed) at the following places : —Grand-Chester, Walloon, Bunya, Mary River, Sawmills, Camp Flat (towards the Logan), Gramzow, Terror's Creek, Postman's Ridge (completed), Ipswich Reserve, Tallebudgera (well advanced), Tent Hill (completed); and school buildings at the following places are receiving additions and repairs :—Qoodna, Gowrie-road, Roma, Oxley Weßt, Figtree Pocket, Laidley, Seventeen-mile Rocks, Bowen Bridge, Normanby, Oakey Creek, and Murphy's Creek. The castings and framework of the lighthouse, North Reef, Capricorn Channel, are being made at the foundry of Messrs. Walker and Co., Mary borough, and are advancing towards completion. It is expected that the whole will be shipped to North Reef and erected in the course of four or five weeks. The contract for a new lighthouse at Low Island, near Cairns, has been let to Mr. W. P. Clarke, who is carrying out the construction in Brisbane, and expects to have the lighthouse erected before the close of the winter. At Cumboyurro Point, on the north-west extremity of Moreton Island, a light-keeper's cottage is being built for the new lighthouse erected some months since at that place ; and at Inskip Point, Wide Bay, the erection of a pilot's cottage has been begun.
