An important meeting of the Highfields Shire Council ,was held at Cabarlah on Mon-da}, at w-hlih there weie presentí Councillors 11. Munro, Leane/ Ivicmuiin, Frawley, Nolan, J. Gleeson, W. .Thorn, M.L.A., and Kynock. The first liti-inw« was the election of cluiruian, the oui»- nomination receiied being .that of Councillor Mump, who was elected unani-mously. This hi the twenty-third consecutivo occasion that Councillor Mutuo baa been elected chairman of thu council, and this, it is under-stood, constilutew a record for any councillor in Queensland. The matter of raising the ratea was lengthily discussed, and eventually it was decided to raise the rates in each division jil. in the £, making the rates lid. in the £. It wah decided that the clerk's salary he £230 l»er annum. The reply of the Home Secretary to the letter of the council regarding the re-moval of the shire office from Cabarlah to Crow's Nest stated that it was desirable ihat a referendum should be taken, and that the cost should be liorna by the winvic of the shire. By a majority of six votes to three the council again decided not to toko a referendum on the matter,
