SOUTH BRISBANE COUNCIL.

ELECTION OF MAYOR.

ALDERMAN SCHOFIELD AP-

POINTED.

The South Brisbane City Council met yesterday to elect the Mayor for ensuing year. 'There were present : Al-dermen D.B. McCullough, R. E. Burton, J. Garsden, G. H. Schofield, J. Burke,

G. Dowrie, J. Davies, H. Neylan, G. H. Blocksidge, G. Savage, A. Shearer, and A. Gillespie.

Alderman D. B. McCullough, as return-ing officer at the recent elections, brieflv announced the result of the annual elec-tions.

The town clerk (Mr. A. Leney) then took the chair, and called for nomina-

tions.

Alderman Downie proposed that Alderman McCullough should be re-elected. There were a number of important works to be carried out in the Fourth Ward, and he thought that Alderman McCullough should have another term to see the works that had

been started brought to a successful

completion. Their Mayor had carried out his duties during the past year in a most

satisfactory manner, and he had much pleasure in proposing him for re-election.

Alderman Blockridge supported the nomi-nation. In doing so, he said he did not wish to cast any slight on the ability of any other aspirants to the Mayoral chair. His reason for supporting Alder-man McCullough was practically that men-tioned by the proposer. In the first place he had never been an advocate of the Mayorship going round. He pointed out that Alderman Luya had held office for three years. This year would be a very

heavy one, particularly in the social

line, and as during the past year Alder man McCullough had filled the position with ability and satisfaction to the council in every way, he thought the council could not do better than reelect him.

Alderman Burton supported the remarks of the previous speakers. During the in-coming year, there were "some very im portant questions to be settled, and the experience gained by Alderman McCullough during the past year would materially assist in doing the work this year. As a social man, Alderman McCullough had been successful and Mrs McCullough had also done much.

Alderman Shearer opposed the nomina-tion, as he considered that the Mayorship should go round the wards.

Alderman Burke also opposed the nomination, and said that if any member of the council was fit to be an alderman, he should be fit to be the Mayor.

Alderman Neylan also opposed the nomination.

On the nomination being put it was defeated, Aldermen Blocksidge, Downie, Garsden, McCullough, and Burton voting

for it.

Alderman Burke then nominated Alder-man Schofield.

Alderman Davies seconded the nomina-tion, which was supported by Alderman Shearer.

On being put Aldermen Burke, Downie, Shearer, Gillespie, Garsden, Davies, Savage, Neylan and Schofield voted in favour of the nomination, and Alderman Schofield was declared elected.

Alderman Schofield thanked the alder-men for the confidence they had reposed in him. He would look for their assistance during his term of office and he was sure that he would get it. He recognised that a good deal was expected of him, 'and he would do his best to give them every satisfaction.
