Torrential rains have fallen in the. south of France, with the result that the livers have been swollen and terrible floods caused in the departments of Hér-ault, Gard, Bouches du Rhone, Vaucluse, and Var. Traffic is entirely suspended in parts of tile country in. consequence of the floods, and greatly interrupted else-where. The river Rhone is still rising fast. Many people are imprisoned by the flood waiters in their houses in the towns of Beziers and Agde, and are suffering from'lack of food. The salvage corps have rescued numbers of people by means of boats and pontoons, but it is" feared that many -lives have been lost. , .

down so suddenly that large numbers of the vintagers had barely time to escape.
