PROPOSED FLOOD-GATES FOR

NORMAN CREEK.

A conference of local authorities in-terested in the question of the construc-tion and erection of flood-gates at the mouth of Norman Creek, to protect the low-lying lands of the watershed, was held on Friday in tho South Brisbane Town Hall. There were present :-Alder-men G H. Blocksidge (Mayor), J. M'Dougall, J. Garsden (South Brisbane), Councillors S. F Robertson (president), T. Rees (Coorparoo), Icke (president), C. D. Skene (Balmoral), H. W. .Luya, J. Soden, (Stephens). Apologies for absence wrere received from Councillors W. H. Barnes, M.L.A. (Coorparoo), and P. Marshall (president of the Stephens Shire). The Mayor was appointed chairman, and the town clerk the secretary. After a con-siderable amount of discussion, Councillor Robertson moved, and Councillor M'Dou-gall seconded a motion, " That this con-ference is of opinion that it is advis-able to take steps to protect the flooded area on the Norman Creek watershed, by the erection of flood gates or other method, the cost to be defrayed by a created benefited area, consisting of the flooded land, the basis to be that deter-mined on in connection with the 1893 flood. This was carried. Councillor Skene said that the motion was not to be binding on the local authorities interest-ed. On the motion of Alderman Rees, it was decided, " That this conference ap-proach the Premier, with a view to ob-taining the services of the hydraulic engineer, for the purpose of attaining a scheme and estimate of cost, to give effect to the former resolution." On the motion of Councillors Skene and Luya, it was agreed that the deputation should consist of members of the conference, to-gether with the Parliamenary repreaenetatives of the district.
