GOODWOOD RACER

Speaking of the results of Goodwood, the editor of the field observes-"Strong in attractions though, the Goodwood programme on the present anniversary undoubtedly was, tha great two and three-year old Tices therein proved comparatively faflures. King of the Forest, Favonios, Shannon, Bippoadea, Dalnacardoch, Lady Atholstane, No-blesse, and Anton, were the créant of tile three-} earold performer« ; and the best Juvenile« seen In the dneal puk were Helmet, Patriarch, Germania, Kane

ham, Peak, Vanderdeoken, Onslow, Liverpool, Violetta, and Simon. Not one of the latter division,

however, can be ranked in tbe first-class, Although' we we not disposed io accept the running-of Helmet lit the Findon Stake' as correct, and still think he is, with the exception* of Cremorne, Nuoeham,' and the Chopettô filly, the best two-year-old in training. Nothing appioachmg Derby form, however, was seen at Goodwood, aâ Cremorne did not run, ard neither of Sir JoVph Hawley^ crack two-year-olds - Alvarez or Blue Sleeve's - had engagements at the meeting. The three "Cups-the Stewards', the Goodwood, and the Chesterfield-brought together excellent fields, and the Victore wate Auton, S bannon, and Botheration, A good deal-of fault was found, erfd justly'so^we tbinic, with" the^manner in which the imposts were distributed for the Stewards' Cup, u Sterling and «varal othexUiorsea- were crushed with weight, whilo the best two-year-old of 1870Anton*-wu indulged with (Jut. lilbs. Of course, it was only i question of whether Anton was ia his old form as to winning ; anu, although he did not get particularly well off in a- bad Start, he won in a'canter by fifteen lengths. The Goodwood competitors were Shannon, Favonius, Mortemer, Rippondon, and Dutch Skater ; and enthusiasm was roused as these fine specimens of the thoroughbred were paraded in front of the Stand and Lawn prior to starting. Mortemer, although his near foreleg was under suspicion - in fact, many good judges pro-nounced the suspensory ligament gone-closed a better favourite than "Favonius, whd was decidedly the grandest-looking horse in the field. Victory, however, was not with the French representativa or the Derby winner, as Shannon, the neat daughter of Lambton, was successful, after one of the slowest-run races ever witnessed. That the defeat of Favonius was a palpable ' fluke * cannot be questioned, as want of pace alone lost Baron Rothschild's colt this popular prize. Shannon is not engaged in the Doncaster St. Leger, neither is Favonius, so that the vexed question as to which is the better animal must stand over till the pair, meet in another cup contest, which they may at Doñeaste*. In the Goodwood Stakes all the leading favourites -the Lady Hungerford colt, Lord Hawke, and Chérie-^went down before old Taraban, who has evi-dently returned to his best form. It was satisfactory to witness the success of the Streatham colours, as Mr. Bowes is an old and honourable sportsman, and breeds the majority of the horses that run in his name. During the week the St Leger betting was somewhat active and important King of the Forest and Hannah closed equal favourites, although Mr. Merr/B colt looked rather jolly at Goodwood. Général advanced to 8 to 1, and he is progressing favourably ou Langton Wolds. Ravenshoe figured at 5 to 1 ; and Corinth us was supported at 1000 to 15. This ho»e, which is a finely-bred one, is said to be the coming St Leger outsider ; but, health permitting, the. winner of the great Doncaster race will be found in Hannah or King of the Forest"
