Governor
Sydney University yes-terday conferred an hon-orary degree of Doctor of
Letters on the Governor, Licut.-Gcncral Sir John Northcott, in a colourful ceremony in the Uni-versity Great Hall.
The ceremony marked the opening of the Sydney Uni-versity Arts faculty "open day" lo celebrate the centen-ary of the faculty. ,
It was the first honorary degree of Doctor of Letters conferred by the Sydney Uni-versity.

Sir John, thanking the University, said that from its maugui alion 100 j ears ago the University had displayed great loyalty and devotion to the Throne
"In this first year of the reign of Queen elizabeth it is fitting that this practical demonstration of loyaltywhich I accept as the humble representative of this Stateshould be displayed again,"

After the confciring of the honorary degree on the Gov-ernor, degrees were conferred on 329" students, including four of Master of Educition and IT of Master of Arts The remainder wcie degrees of Bachelor of Arts
