NEED OF

"FREE" GIFTS

Sir James Learmonth said yesterday that the persons contemplating making gifts to a university should accept unconditionally the university's advice.

"The university knows no) only its needs but also the proper balance between these needs," he said.

"Donors should not put any but the broadest conditions to a benefaction in these days of great changes."

He was speaking yesterday at Sydney University at the Commemoration of Benefac tors, a traditional ceremony which pays tribute to person« and organisations which have made gifts to the university

Earlier m the day about 600 people in the Great Hall of the university saw the Chancellor, Sir Charles Bicker-ton Blackburn, confer on Sir James Learmonth the honorary degree of Doctor of Science
