LEADING ARCHITECT TO VISIT

AUSTRALIA

Professor Walter Gropius, a leading" world figure in contemporary architecture, has accepted an invitation of the Royal Australian Insti-

tute of Architects to attend the fourth Australian Archi-tectural Convention, lo be held in Sydney from May 10 to May 15.

Professor Gropius, who was bom in Germany, is now on the faculty of Harvard Uni-versity, U.S.A.

In a cable from the United States after his return from a visit to Peru, Professor Gro-pius said that he expected to

arrive in Australia on May 4. ;

Other notable figures who have advised that they will at tend the convention are Pro fessor Robert Matthew, Pro fessor of Architecture at Edin burgh College of Art, and Mr J J King, president of the New Zealand Institute of Ar chitccts

More than 500 architects

are expected, including many from other States

Among the convention's at tractions will be the Architcc ture and Building Exhibition in the Sydney Town Hall, and an International Architectural Exhibition of photographs and models in David Jones's gal Iery

Great Britain, the United States, Canada, Belgium, Italj Finland, Japan, Greece, Ger many and Mexico have pro mised to send material

The convention is being con ducted on behalf of the Roya Australian Institute of Archi tects by a committee, thi chairman of which is Professoi H Ingham Ashworth, Dean ol the Faculty of Architecture al the University of Sjdney
