Lady Slim At University's

farden Party

Lady Slim, wife of (lie Governor-General, Field Mar-shal Sir William Slim, looking well again after her recent illness, had a particularly «ann welcome «hen she made her first official appear-ance in Sydney yesterday..

She watched the conferring of the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws on Sir Wil-liam at Sydney University.

After luncheon in (he Holme Room of the Union, at which Sir William and Lady Slim were guests of the Fellows of the Senate, Sir William inspected the guard of honour provided by the Sydney University Regiment.

The inspection was followed by (he Commemoration of Benefactors ceremony on the lawns in front of the main university building, and after-wards more than 2,000 guests attended a garden party in the quadrangle.

Sir William and Lady Slim had afternoon tea with the Chancellor, Sir Charles .Bickerton Blackburn, and the acting Vice-Chancellor, Pro-fessor A. D. Trendall, in the Vicc-Chanccilor's rooms.

BRILLIANT SCENE

Later, attended by members of their personal staff,' the Chancellor, and his daughterin-law, Mrs. Ruthven Black-burn, they joined the brilliant scene ' in the quadrangle, where academic robes out-shone the suits and tiny hats chosen by most women.

Lady Slim wore a loose brown velvet coat with a velvet-trimmed dress, and a pale cocoa-beige shell hat.

Among the guests presented to Lady Sljm was Mrs. A. W. Morrow, whose husband, Dr. Morrow, attended her during ber illness.

Three members of Ihe uni-versity staff, who were under Sir William's command in the 14th Army in Burma, and their wives, were presented to him. They were Professor H. I. Ashworth and Mrs. Ash-worth. Professor D. Peart and Mrs. Peart, and Major Hilary Power and Mrs. Power.

WOMEN MEET

Last night the Sydney Uni-versity Women Graduates' Association held a meeting at Ferguson Hall at which Dr. Frances Moran, of Trinity College, Dublin, immediate past president of the Inter-national Federation of Uni-versity Women, . was the speaker.

The president of the Aus-tralian Federation of Univer-sity Women, Mrs. G. P. Stuckey, announced that the annual confernece of the fed-eration would be held in Bris-bane from January 6 lo 13.
