AUSTRALIAN ART

DISPLAY ABROAD

MELBOURNE, Fri-day.—Paintings of 12

Australian artists will be shown this year at Coro-nation displays in Lon-don and Venice.

A member of the Com-monwealth Art Advisory Board, Mr. R. Campbell, who announced details of the dis-

plays to-night, said the exhibi-tions would give Australian art "its biggest boost in his-tory."

The Prime Minister, Mr. Menzies, and the British Arts Council had asked for the works of 12 Australians to be shown at overseas exhibitions.

Fifty-six paintings of the 12 artists will be sent abroad.

Their paintings will be on display in London during the Coronation and at Britain's

five biggest provincial cities.

Later, the works will be shown at the world-famous Biemmalce International Art Exhibition in Venice.

Mr. Campbell said the 12 artists, who would be told next week that their works had been chosen are: William Dobell. Russell Drysdale, Sid-ney Nolan, Lloyd Rees, Ronald Friend, Justin O'Brien., Jean Bellette, Constance Stokes, Arthur Boyd, Godfrey Millar, Frank Hinder, and Ralph Balson.

Dobell. Drysdale, and Nolan will each have 10 paint-ings exhibited abroad, and Boyd six.

The artists had been select-ed by the gallery directors of all States at the request of the Arts Council.

Ten of the artists chosen now live in New South Wales. The other two, Constance Stokes and Arthur Boyd, now live in Victoria.

Mr. Campbell said that many of the pictures chosen had been lent by private col-

lectors and the others had been chosen from national galleries.
