£500 Art

Prize

Awarded

Mr. Jeffrey Smart, a young South Australian artist, yesterday won the £500 first prize in the Commonwealth Jubilee Open Art competition.

His figure composition, "Wallaroo," was chosen by

six judges at the Brisbane National Art Gallery.

Miss Jean Bellette, of

Ocean Avenue, Double Bay, won the second prize of £300 with a figure com-position, "The Bathers."

A landscape painting, "Country near Canberra," by Mr. John Eldershaw, of Narrabeen, won the third prize of £200.

Mr. Smart recently re-turned from studying art in Italy.

He is now living in Dar-linghurst, Sydney.

GOVT. PROPERTY

The three winning works will become the property of the Commonwealth Gov-ernment.

The Jubilee Plastic Arts Committee organised the

competition, for which 21 paintings and one piece of Sculpture were entered.
