League Drops

State Selector

State and Australian Rugby League selector, Mr. Jerry Brien, was last night dropped from the panel of selectors by the annual meeting of the N-S.W. Rugby League.

Brien was narrowly de-feated by former State repre-sentative player, Mr. Alby Why.

Brien's dismissal now means that he will be ineligible for ap-pointment as an Australian selec-

tor.

The result of the ballot came as a complete surprise to many delegates.

Brien polled much better than Why in the first count for metro-politan selectors, but Why won the State berth on a distribution of preferences.

Why and ex-international Mr. J. Robinson were appointed metropolitan selectors, replacing Messrs. N. Robinson and A. O'Connor, who did not seek re-

election.

The five N.S.W. selectors this year will be: Messrs. B. Gray. R. Smith, A. Why, and country selectors Max Bailey (Newcastle) and Harry Nolan (Pt. Kembla).

Former Newtown club dele-

gate, Mr. Alf. Thompson, was elected a vice-president, replac

ing Mr. W. G. Bennett, who did not nominate this year.

Mr. Thompson managed the successful 1948 Kangaroo tour of New Zealand.

All other members of the senior committees were returned.

The president, Mr. H. Flegg, and his deputy, Mr. J. Quinlan, were returned unopposed.
