REVIEW OF RANDWICK FORM

12.45-Princess Handicap, 7f

? CARRIOLE, 8-8: Brilliant galloper, and consistent. Since

completing spell has had five runs, which have yielded three wins and two seconds. Was beaten in each of the two seven-furlong races she contested-both Mixed Stakes events at Rosehill- first by Count Bourbon, and later by Beau Sandy. However, ridden by N. Sellwood, who will take the mount on her to-day, scored impressively from Dickens in recent seven-furlong

barrier-trial at Victoria Park.

B' HAPPY MEDIUM, 9-2:

Good-class Victorian filly, who will be having first run in Sydney. Finished good second to Chicquita in V.R.C. Oaks (lim) in spring, and mads evident that she had returned to form in winning, with 8-6, Bev-erley Handicap (lim) from Even-ing Light (7-10) at Flemington on

March l8.

B PANTOMIME, 9-5:

Dropped out after being headed at top of straight by Brazier in division of Denham Court Handicap, run over this course on heavy track, on March W, but should not be judged on that display. Js fast, and a good weight-carrier. Carried 8-12 when she led all way in Bondi Handi-cap (7f) at Randwick on January 30. Two starts later won Can-terbury Flying (7}f).

TIVOLI STAR, 8-12: Has not started since scoring gamely, with 9-3 less 71b allowed, from stablemate, Curiosity (8-4), and Vali-ant Lee (8-5), in six-furlong Wei

ter at Moorefield on March 4. Track was heavy on that occa-sion. Form was confirmed by

Valiant Lee's third in last Satur-

day's A.J.C. Liverpool Handicap (7f).

DONA MARCHETA, 8-8: Won two one-mile races for three-year-old fillies at Randwick in December and January. Scored from New Look in Mer-sey Stakes (fixed weights), and from Ferocious Lass, whom she conceded 141b, in Valicare Han-dicap. Was having first run for six weeks when she failed in Tanport's Three-year-old, run over same course, on March II, but carried 8-10 on heavy track.

ELUSIVE, 8-7: Honest filly, whose last three attempts have yielded two seconds and third. Likely to be running on strongly in closing stages. Last ran on March 11, when, with 8-7, fin-ished creditable third to Tanport (7-3) and Ferocious Lass (7-7) in AJ.C. Three-Year-Old Handicap (lm), on heavy track.

1.35-Vaucluse Handicap, 7f

O HIGH ORDER, 8.4: Has shown best form in middle

distance races, but, being fresh, 'should be suited by this seven furlong journey. Had only recent -run on March 11, when, after being prominent from start, finished fair third, with 8-4, to Dalston (8-11) and Fra Diavolo (9-9) in AJ.C. Edensor Park Handicap (lm). To meet Dalsto- 71b more favour-ably _ to-day.

0 VALIANT LEE, 8-10:

Has been placed at two of last three starts. Came Dome strongly to finish close third to Tivoli Star and Curios-ity in six furlong Welter -at Moorefield on March 4. After failing in Buzmark's Railway Quality Handicap (7f) at Rose-hill three weeks later, finished fair third with 6-8 to Bungymun (7-1) and Grey Boots (7-8) in A.J.C. Liverpool Handicap (7f) last Saturday.

H MAROUBRA, 8-10: Un-

reliable, but good gallo-per. Has won over this course on both heavy and firm "tracks. Carried 8-10 when he won Highweight (7f) by three" . quarters of length from Alabama - JCing (9-6) at Randwick on De-

cember 27. Has since finished

unplaced in three similar Rand-wick events.

DALSTON, 9-4: Jias not started since winning, with 8-11, A.J.C. Edensor Park Handicap (lm) by half length from Fra Diavolo (9-9), with High Order (8-4) length and half away, third, on March 11. Should give good account of himself over this shorter journey, but stablemate, Maroubra, may have better

chance.

FREYBERG, 9-2: Won two two-year-old races, including one run over this course on heavy track, last season. In second run since spell, was prominent to top of straight in Bungymua's A.J.C. Liverpool Handicap (7f) last Saturday. Must be conceded chance.

2.10-Sires' Produce Stakes, 7f

? TRUE COURSE, 8-8: Good-class Midstream (imp.) filly

from Melbourne. Has not raced in Sydney. Has record of four wins and second from five starts. Was spelled after being beaten by Ajanni in Mimosa Stakes (5f) at Flem-ington on November 1, and has since won V.R.C. Criterion Handicap (5f), V.A.T.C. Teppo Stakes (5f), and V.R.C. Sires' Produce Stakes (li).

KARANGI, 8-10: Has record of two "wins and two close seconds from five starts. In first run for three months, won division of last Sat-urday's A.J.C. Fairfield Handi-cap (6f) easily from Iroquois.

whom he conceded 51b.

TITIAN, 8-8: After four successive easy wins, the last in A.J.C. December Stakes (5f) on Boxing Day, fin-ished unplaced in Recompense's division of Fairfield Handicap (6f) at Randwick last Saturday. However, as she was having her first run for three months, and was burdened with 9-5 on heavy track, that failure should be excused.

BEAU GENE, 8-10: Has fail-

ed under big weights on heavy j tracks at last two starts, bul I earlier form had been good. Three starts back scored easily, with 8-12, from Carioca (8-5) in A.J.C. Hoxton Park Juvenile (5f).

YERINGA BEAU, 8-10: Fin

0 El

¡shed fourth at first start, and has since gained close third and two close seconds from three runs. At most recent appearance, on March 25, gave sound perform-ance in running Recompense, who conceded him 101b. to head in Macarthur Quality Handicap (64 f) at Rosehill.

MATTERHORN, 8-10: Fourth in V.R.C. Sires' Produce Stakes, won by True Course, and may again find that filly, for one, too good. Did not impress in Karangi's division of Fairfield Handicap (6f) at Randwick last Saturday.

EVEN FLOW, 8-8: Has gain-ed two wins, three seconds, and third from seven starts. Was re-sponsible for sound performance at last start at Randsvick on March 11. Carrying 9-5 on heavy track, finished strongly to win March Nursery (6f) from Vien Court (7-10) and Le Dau-phin (8-8). To meet Le Dauphin 131b more favourably here.

2.50-Doncaster Handicap, Im

DBUZMARK, 7-13: Very consistent performer who has

151b less than weight-f any kind of going. With 7-13shown himself suited byor-age-is favourably Weighted, and attracts as likely winner. Gained fourth successive win in Tramway Handicap (7f), at Randwick on ¡September 10, fol-lowed by second, with 7-8 to Dcnali (8-5), in A J.C. Epsom Han-dicap. Since spell scored easily, with 8-2 from Tartan Girl (7-1), in Rosehill Railway Quality Handicap (7f), on heavy track.

Very fit.

H LORD MOSS, 8-7:

Showed good form over distances up to mile and quarter in New Zealand, and at first start in Australia, on March l8, easily won, with 8-10, Can-terbury Flying (7if), from Jour-nalist (7-10). Has-since started once, failing in Bungymun's A.J.C. Liverpool Handicap (7f), last Saturday. Appeared to be going better than his rivals npproaching home turn, but was unable to take advantage of rails opening at top of straight.

B GREAT TREK, 7-10

Though he has not been successful since winning Wellington (N.Z.) Stakes (6f), more than two years ago, has performed well enough at recent starts to suggest chance "here. On last two Saturdays has finished fifth in Buzmark's Rosehill Rail-

way Quality Handicap (7f). and in Bungymun's A.J.C. Liverpool Handicap.

THE GROOM, 9-4: In Spring won George Main Stakes (W.F.A.), run over this course on heavy track, from Bernbrook, and indicated by fourth in Buzmark's Rosehill Railway Quality Handicap (7f), a fortnight ago that he had regained form.

DE LA SALLE, 9-3: Won Epsom (with 7-13). and. George Main Stakes (W.F.A.). both run over this course, and Caulfield Stakes (9f; W.F.A.), in Spring of 1948, and may now have re-gained top form. Ran on well to finish fourth in Bungymun's Liverpool Handicap (7f).

ACHILLES, 8-6: Showed him-self good-class colt in Spring. After being beaten nose by Col-umnist in Chelmsford Stakes (9f; W.F.A.), at Randwick, and finish-ing good second to Vagabond in Hill Stakes (8if; W.F.A.), at Rosehill, won Greenvale Handi-cap (lm) at Moonee Valley and Batman Stakes (lim) at Flem-ington. Form at two of last three starts has been good.

BLUE LEGEND, 8-6: Has won three big one-mile races at Randwick-Doncaster and Ep-som in 1946, and Doncaster in 1947. However, would need to

improve on anything he has done

for some time to have chance here. Suited by heavy - going.

ROMAN STEP, 8-0: Has shown best form in middle-dis-tance races, though he has good sprint efforts to his credit. Does not appeal strongly here.

.BLUE FLAG, 7-12: Seems to find mile little farther than he can go. Had every chanco when beaten into third place by Johnny Zero and Great World in A.J.C. Bowral Handicap on

December 27. Won over six furlongs at Randwick at next two

starts.

MONA'S CHOICE, 7-12: Has worked well since failing to show up in Buzmark's Railway Quality Handicap (7f). at Rosehill' fort' night ago. Has had only one run since spell.- Proved her-self good filly in.winning Fern-hill Handicap (lm; for twö-yearolds), with 9-3 on heavy track at last A.J.C. Autumn meeting, and in Spring won Flight Stakes (for three-year-old fillies), also over this course.

I DUKE OF SYKE, 7-12: Scored easily over this course

in weak three-year-old company last April, but has shown best form in somewhat longer races.

VALIANT CROWN, 7-10: Scored last win in 1947 A.J.C. Derby (lim). Has not raced since poor effort in Roman Step's Squatters' Handicap (Um), at last A.J.C. Spring meeting.

MORTAR, 7-7: Probably no1 as good as he was when he fin-ished fair third, with 7-2, to Bernbrook (8-4) and Vagabond (8-4), in Doncaster last year. Knocked up badly in Bungymun's Liverpool Handicap (7f), at Randwick last Saturday.

FORDHAM, 7-7: Nizami (Fr.), four-year-old from Mel-bourne. Has not raced in Sydney. Form scarcely up to

Doncaster standard.

GREY BOOTS," 7-7: Form would suggest that he is no1 miler, but is honest galloper, who has shown himself suited by soft ground. Since winning Aus-tralia Day Handicap (7f), with 7-8, from Hesdin (7-7), on Janu-ary 30, has started twice, finish-ing close second to Zipper in Salisbury Welter (lm) at Caul-field on February 25 and Bungymun in last Saturday's A.J.C. Liverpool Handicap (7f).

BEAU CASTE, 7-3: Beaten decisively by Beau China in Mixed 'Stakes (6f), at Canter-bury on March l8, and at next start, last Saturday, won onemile Novice at Newcastle.

HESDIN, 7-3: Smart threeyear-old, who has shown good form since announcement of weights for this race. Led all way to win Glenfield Handicap, over this course, from Beau Rob-ert on February 11. After miss-ing place in Pantomime's Can-terbury Flying (7if), scored bril-liantly, with 7-13, from Star Vite (7-11), in division of A.J.C. Den-ham Court Handicap (7f), run on heavy track, on March 11

BOLD ARCHER, 7-0: Scored fourth Randwick one-mile win when he finished brilliantly to beat Susan by nearly two lengths in Cabramatta Handicap lasl Saturday.

MULGRAVE, 6-12: Has not started since Yvinning Illawarra Handicap (lm), from Pearl Trader at Kembla on January 4.

LORD SWYNFORD, 6-12: Showed best form in finishing third to Bold Archer and Susan in Cabramatta Handicap (lm). at Randwick last Saturday. Was always close to front, and was beaten narrowly by Susan foi second place. To meet Susan 101b less favourably here,

LADY FINIS, 6-12: New Zealand four-year-old, who has won at only two starts in Aus-tralia. Followed up Newcastle Welter (lm) success by scoring narrowly with 8-5 less 51b allowed, from Drastic (8-6), in Rosehill Welter (9f), fortnigbi

ago.

-SUSAN, 6-9: Soundly beaten by Bold Archer in Cabramatta Handicap, run over this course on heavy track last Saturday but was ridden hard in first twe furlongs to take lead.

JENVAL, 6-7: Was backed for Bold Archer's Cabramatta Handicap (lm), at Randwick 'ast Saturday, but was never promi-

nent.

RANDWICK: Weather fine; track heavy.

. CAULFIELD: Weather showery; track holding.

Playboy; the "Herald" selection for the AJ.C. St. Leger.

3.25-A.J.C. St. Leger, lfm

n- PLAYBOY, 8-10: After finishing brilliantly to ma, with

9-11 less 71b silo wed, Randwick Three-Year-Old (lui) from Elusive (8-7-less 71b allowed) on February 11, dis-appointed in two races in Melbourne. Finished poor second to Delta in V.R.C. St.'Leger. Gave sound performance in finishing third, with 9-3,-to Belle Amber (7-8) and Beau China (8-3) in AJ.C. Cobbitty Handicap (lim), run on heavy track last Satur-day, and is now looking perfectly fit. Won AJ.C. Derby from Delta and Dickens, and may again prove too good for those colts to-day.

B DICKENS, 8-10: Has

raced only twice since spell, winning Rawson Stakes (9f, w.f.a.) from Delta at Rosehill on Saturday week, and finishing second to Carbon Copy in A.J.C. Chipping Norton Stakes (lim, w.f.a.) last Saturday. Showed in spring that he thrives on racing. After number of earlier runs, two of which yielded minor placings in A.J.C. Derby and Victoria Derby, won two weight-for-age races-Linlithgow Stakes (lm) and C. B. Fisher Plate- (lim)-at Flemington.

H DELTA, 8-10: In spring

finished second to Play-boy in A.J.C. Derby and i won Victoria Derby. Was hailed | as outstanding colt when, after > scoring easily from Playboy in

V.R.C. St. Leger, won King's Plate (Um, w.f.a.) from Carbon Copy at Flemington on March 15. Since latter success, how-ever, has failed, twice. Was beaten by Dickens in Rawson Stakes (9f, w.f.a.) at Rosehill on Saturday week, and last Saturday dropped out in last two furlongs of AJ.C. Chipping Norton Stakes (Um, w.f.a.), won by Car-bon Copy from Dickens. Appar-ently feeling effects of racing.

BROTHER ARTHUR, 840: Could scarcely be conceded a chance. Finished several lengths behind Playboy (third) in AJ.C. Cobbitty Handicap (Um) won by Belle Amber, last Saturday, and will meet him 28U> less favour-ably here. Recent form has been

poor.

4.0-Autumn Stks (w.f.a.), lim

n CARBON COPY. 9-0: Beat weak opposition in winning

Carbine Stakes at Flemington fortnight ago, but made evident in winning AJ.C. Chipping Norton Stakes (Uni, w.f.a.) from Dickens last Saturday that he had regained top form. Has won number of races at Randwick, including AJ.C. Derby (lim) and Sydney Cup (2m). Should not be

troubled to score here.

B VAGABOND, 9-0: After

disappointing in three shorter races, finished moderate third to Carbon Copy and Dickens in Chipping Norton Stakes (Um, w.f.a.) at Randwick last Saturday. May find this longer journey more suitable. Finished good second to Carbon Copy in both A.J.C. Derby (lim) and Sydney Cup (2m) last season, and in October won spring counterpart of (his raceColin Stephen Slakes-from Cronides and Carbon Copy.

DARK MARNE, 9-0. Would not seem likely to beat either Carbon Copy or Vagabond, but may prove best of other runners. Sound

stayer, and has proved himself at weight-for-agc. Has had four recent runs, and is again looking Well. Finished poor fourth in Carbon Copy's Chipping Norton Stakes (Um, w.f.a.) at Randwick last Saturday but, as track Was heavy, .that elTort may safely be

[disregarded.

E3

CRONIDES, 9-3: Ha,s shown no form for' considerable time. Finished bad last in Chipping Norton Stakes (lim. w.f.a.) at Randwick last Saturday. These days his chief role in races seems to be to ensure sound pace for stablemate, Carbon Copy.

SNOWSTREAM, 9-0: Had only recent run in Rawson

Stakes (9f, w.f.a.) at Rosehill ;? fortnight ago. Was expected by connections to make good show-, ing, but failed badly. Won L. K. S. Mackinnon Stakes (Um,

w.f.a.) at 1948 V.R.C. spring , meeting, andz-has since won Tat-tersalls Cup (lim). Rosehill Xmas Handicap (Hm), und A.J.C. Summer Cup (lm 50 .vith weights in vicinity of 9-0. Has shown good form on soft tracks.

SIR FALCON, 9-0: Followed up easy Rosehill I0-furlong suc-cess by scoring attractively from Benvolo in Warwick Autumn Handicap (Um) at Randwick

last .Saturday. Still, could hardly k

be fancied here .,

I (Randwick Review Continued-Page 3") . :.

^Randwick (Cid.)

4.40-Tocal Handicap, ljm

O GOLDEN BIRD, 7-2: Gulden Sovereign (¡mp.) three

year-old, who began racing only last November. Was having seventh start vi ben he romped home, with 7-8, from Peace Treaty (8-11) in Trial Stakes (lim) run on heavy track, at Randwick last Saturday. That performance was attrac-tive, as he finished strongly, at ter having been forced along in first two furlongs. Big, rangy gelding, who is regarded by many as having good Sydney Cup chance. With light weight, should

test best of rivals to-day.

H FIREARM, 8.-1: Having

only second run since spell, gave encouraging performance in finishing fourth in .Rawson Stakes (9f, W.F.A.), won by Dickens, at Rosehill fort-night, ago. Carrying 7-4, won Tocal last year from Sir Raven (7-11). Unsound, and will find soft track to his liking.

H SILVER BUZZ, 7-9: Has

had two recent runsin shorter races-and is

' again fit. To carry only 51b more than weight with which he won from Burnley (7-12) ovei this course on December 24.

INDIAN CHIEF, 8-9: Beaten easily by Sir Falcon, whom he was asked to concede 51b, in Rosehill Three and Four Yearold Handicap (lim) at Rosehill fortnight ago, but did not have best of luck in latter stages of

race. Not without chance.

AIR FLARE, 8-7: Though he disappointed in Chitral's Canter-bury Cup (9f) on March l8, cannot safely be disregarded. Has twice won over this course and, judged on best form, is not harshly weighted. Suited by heavy going.

- TAMASHA, 8-2: Gave en- couraging display in finishing

third to Pantomime and Persist in Canterbury Flying (7£f) on February 25, and had only sub-sequent- run in Rosehill Welter

_ _i

(9f), won by Lady Finis, fort-night ago. In latter race had to carry big weight on heavy track and failed to run on.

HIGH SPIRITS, 8-0: Has not started since finishing second to Freedom in A.J.C. Anniversary Handicap (lim) on January 30. Not suited by soft going.

DRASTIC, 7-5: Has gained two seconds and fourth from last three starts. Last ran fortnight ago, when, carrying 8-6, he was beaten narrowly by Lady Finis (8-5, less 51b allowed) in Rosehill Welter (9f). Suited by heavy track and, with light weight, 'should make good showing.
