LONDON, Dec. 15.-The most popular film in Britain in 1949 is "The Third Man," a British production directed by Carol Reed and starring Orson Welles, Joseph Cotton, and Trevor Howard.

The film was on top in the annual box-office survey conduc-ted by the editor of the "Kinematograph Weekly."

Runner-up was the Hollywood film, "Johnny Belinda," in which Jane Wyman's portrayal of a deaf mute was considered the best performance of the year.

Most popular star was Alan Ladd, with Danny Kaye a close

second.

Britain's "Scott of the Ant-arctic" was considered the best full-length documentary.
