THE CHURCHES: 'VJWFWdWPJf

League Planned To

Help New Settlers

é

Representatives of all N.S.W. Churches and welfare organisations mil meet, the Minister for Immigration, Mr. A. A. Calwell, next month to discuss the formation of a New Settlers' League to help-migrants. I

At present, the churches are trying to help migrants on their way to Australia.

Last April, 14 chaplains of most denominations left Australia for England on the Georgie.

Most of these have now re-lumed to Australia on British migrant ships.

The Immigration Department allows one or two Protestant Ministers and one Roman Catho-lic priest to travel on each ship.

The Anglican chairman of the inter-denominational migration Voluntary Service of N.S.W. Major. General the Rev. C. A. Osborne, said that ships which carried only a few migrants were met by chap-lains at Perth.

EUROPEAN MIGRANTS

Major-Gerteral Osborne said that European migrants had no con-tact with Australian churchmen until they reached migrant camps.

"We have tried to find a way of meeting the migrants when they land, but Customs and Immigra-tion officials take up all their time," he said.

The Chairman of the Methodist Committee, the Rev. R. J. Noble, said yesterday that the crucial stage of the migrant's settling-in was when he had found a home.

"That's the time when he wants guidance on every-day problems," he said.

The secretary of the Catholic Immigration Committee, Father G. M. Crenan, said that all churchmen working with migrants should be well-informed on Australian affairs,

"Many migrants would ask a chaplain questions that they would hesitate to put to an immigration I officer," he said. '

"Early this month. 24 Aus-tralian, Polish, Lithuanian and Hungarian Roman Catholic priests met in Sydney to discuss immigra-tion problems.

| "Some of these men are fine

linguists adept in interpreting the needs of European migrants."
