STUDENTS' "MAYPOLE" PRANK IN MARTIN PL AC El
Twenty-one University men undergraduates yester-day invaded Martin Place in pantomime fairy cos-
tumes.
Carrying a placard saying
"Maypole by Courtesy ' of City Council," they danced in a circle around the Martin Place clock.
Several other activities-a yo-yo competition and groups of students gazing into space
to attract passers-by-were organised to distract attention from preparations for the main
event.
,Few people took notice.
A policeman stopped the "Maypole" dancers, after three
minutes and ordered them out of Martin Place.
The students were celebrating the last day of Commemoration Week. Three faculties, Arts, Medicine, and Law, claimed credit for originating the "stunt."
