FILM BANNED

IN N.S.W.

'Brighton Rock'

The Chief Secretary, Mr. J. M. Baddeley, has forbidden the film "Brighton Rock" to be shown in New South Wales.

A senior officer of the Chief Secretary's Department said last night that Mr.Baddeley banned the film about two months ago after the Commonwealth Film Censorship Appeals Board had passed it for exhibition in Aus-tralia, with cuts.

The officer declined to reveal what reasons Mr. Baddeley gave for his action. He said the Chief Commonwealth Films Censor, Mr. J. O. Alexander, first banned the film, but the Appeals Board reversed his decision.

Mr. Baddeley was not available for comment yesterday.

The film was made in England. It is adapted from a novel by Graham Greene, and deals with gang wars between criminals in Brighton, England.

No action has been taken against the film in South Aus-tralia, Tasmania, or Western

Australia.

A message from Perth says it is understood the film will be shown there later this year.

The New South Wales Chief Secretary's Department last ban-ned a film in 1934. It was the Australian bushranger film "When the Kellys Rode." The ban was lifted recently.
