PHILIPPINES PRISONERS

Better Treatment

MANILA, Aug. 22 (A.A.P.).— Captain Dan Shaw, an Ameri-can pilot who has been released by the Japanese in the Philip-

pines, said the treatment of prisoners of war improved abruptly the day the Japanese Emperor's capitulation was an-

nounced.

He was released with a personal note from General Yamashita, com-mander of the Japanese forces in Luzon.

Captain Shaw was injured when he parachuted from a burning fighter behind the Japanese lines. He was held prisoner for nine days, and be-fore the capitulation was threatened with torture if he refused to yield in-

formation.

CHUNGKING, Aug. 22 (A.A.P.).— The humanitarian team in Mukden quotes the Russians as saying that a Liberator is en route to fetch General Wainwright, who is in a prisoner-of-war camp in Manchuria.

A Russian mission reached the camp yesterday, and immediately ousted the Japanese guards.

Major-General George Parker, an American, who was a prisoner, having been captured on Bataan, was placed in full charge.

Reports from the team in Peiping said that all internees there, including a number of Britons, had moved to hotels.

The team in Weihsien requested ad-ditional medical supplies, but said there was no great emergency.
