MANILA OCCUPIED BY JAPANESE

FORCES

Manila, capital of the Philippines, was occupied by the Japanese yesterday afternoon, the B.B.C. stated this morning, quoting a United States War Depart-

ment announcement.

In a communique issued at Kuala Lumpur yesterday, the new Commander-in-Chief in the Far East, General Sir Henry Pownall, declared that it was intended to fight for every inch of ground down the Malayan Peninsula. Con-siderable help was on the way, he added. (See Page 11.)
