ARRIVALS IN MARIPOSA

Brazilian Consul

Because he and his wife had heard so much that they liked about Aus-tralia, the new Brazilian Consul, Mr. Mario Santos, specially requested to

be sent to Australia when he had completed his term in San Francisco. Mr. and Mrs Santos arrived in Syd-ney in the Mariposa yesterday with their two young sons, Mario and

Affonso.

This is the first time Brazil has sent a Consul to Australia. "My hus-band and I, we read much about your country, and we decided that there should be a greater friendship between our people and Australians," said Mrs Santos, who, in addition to English, speaks French fluently.

Until they find a home in Sydney, Mr. and Mrs Santos will stay at the Australia Hotel.

ESCAPED FROM FRANCE

How she escaped from Paris before the Germans arrived and spent several months teaching English in a small french village in unoccupied France, was described yesterday by Miss Alice Bolger, of Mosman, when she arrived in the Mariposa. She was in Paris studying singing under Madame Gillies when France fell, and escaped with Madame Gillies to her cottage

at Eauze.

"I was half-starving most of the time I was in France. For six weeks I only had sweet turnips and bread to eat" Miss Bolger said. Finally, she travelled to Perpignan on the Spanish border without waiting for a safe-conduct pass. Through the aid of the Apostolic Delegate at Vichy she was at last able to get to Lisbon, where she had to wait for four months before she could leave for the United States.

TO LIVE IN SINGAPORE

Mr and Mrs M. Silveistein returned to Sydney in the Mariposa yesterday after spending a three months' honey-moon in America. Mrs Silverstein was formerly Miss Betty Bryant, the Australian film star, who played in 'Forty Thousand Horsemen". They spent several weeks in New York, where the Australian Minister in Washington, Mr Casey, attended the opening of the film. They will leave on December 26 by plane for Singa-pore where Mr Silverstein is the re-presentative for MGM Studios.
