LYLE MEDALS

AWARDED

The Australian National Research Council has awarded Thomas Ranken Lyle Medals to Dr. G. H. Briggs and Professor T. G. Room for their re-searches in physics and mathematics respectively, from 1935 to 1940. The medal is awarded to "the living author of such researches in mathematics and physics as may appear to the Council to be most deserving of such honour." Dr. Briggs is the officer in charge of the section of physics of the Aus-tralian National Standards Labora-tory. Dr. Briggs's researches have been principally in the field of nuclear physics and the science of electricity.

Professor Room is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Syd-ney, to which he came from a lecture-ship in the University of Cambridge. He has made important contributions to geometry, and is the author of a book of determinantal loci which is

regarded as a standard work in the field of projective geometry. Recently he was elected a Fellow of the Royal

Society.
