FIRST STAWELL GIFT

WINNER.

DEATH OF WILLIAM MILLARD.

MELBOURNE. Sunday

Mr. William Millard, winner of the first Stawell Gift foot-race, held in 1878, died on Friday at the Hamilton Public Hospital. Mr. Millard, who was a farmer, at Condah, was aged 84 years.

Millard won the Stawell Gift by inches from the three yards mark, with W. Mitchell, off nine yards, second, in 12¾s. The verdict was not unanimous and many thought that the result should been a dead-heat. After Mitchell had won the second heat there was a dispute whether he should be allowed to run. His acceptance had been sent for the race, but had been mislaid. An objection raised was subsequently withdrawn.
