GUEST REPROVES

HOSTS.

Street Clothes at Dinner.

"DRESS COUNTS."

At the annual dinner oí the Local Government Engineers' Association st the Carlton Hotel last night, one of the guests, Alderman P. L. Nolan, Mayor

of Manly, reproved his hosts for not appearing in dinner jackets.

With all respect to his hosts, he said, he deprecated the fact, that few of them, although they were professional men, wore evening dress

as he did.

"Clothes count," said Alderman Nolan. "They stamp the professional man as such, and I am surprised and disappointed that so few of you apparently realised this."

To prove his argument, Alderman Nolan told of his experience when he became Mayor last

year.

"The Mayor of Manly used to wear a beau-tiful black silk Geneva gown with purple velvet facings," he said, "but I thought that an extra touch was needed."

A voice: A touch of lipstlckl (Laughter.*)

Alderman Nolan: No; what was needed was some ornamentation for the neck, so I had a Jabot designed, and now the Mayoral uni-form is completed with six or seven cascades of lace foaming down in front of the neck.

A voice: We will have to speak to Mr. Spooner about this. (LaUghter.*»

Nevei theless, Mr. Nolan added, he believed in dress for the occasion, and he expiessed the hope, "in all humility," that next year the engineers would, dress for their confeience

dinner.
