TUNCURRY PRISON

CAMP.

Abolition Proclaimed.

A proclamation abolishing the afforestation camp at Tuncurry as a place of detention for prisoners has been issued by the State Govern-

ment.

The camp which cost about £25 000 WHS condemned as uneconomic by forestry experts after a detailed examination last year. The prisoners were removed to afforestation camps In other parts of the State and the authorities are considering whether some of the other afforestation camps for the growing of pine

trees should be maintained

The Tuncurry plantation consists of 3380 acres with 2,662,000 pine trees. Thirty miles have been fenced. It was the first a afforesta tion camp in New South Wales and was established 24 years ago

The prisoners who were sent to Tuncurry were first offenders over the age of 21 years. Before being sent to this camp they served a period in an ordinary gaol with other first offenders, where their suitability for a prison camp was gauged.
