Protests Dismissed.

MORE CHAMPIONSHIPS.

The protest committee of the City of Sydney Eisteddfod met for the first timo yesterday since the eisteddfod was opened, when two protests were dismissed. They had been lodged against the winners of the operatic scenes In costume and the light soprano section, on the grounds that Leah Morris, of Newcastle, was a professional sinrer.

There were 16 sections during the day and evening, and judging took place In seven city halls. The large audiences indic-ited that keen public interest Is being maintained in the various contests.

After Mr. Harold Waters had tiven his decision In the vocal solo for boys and girls under 8 years, one mother protested that the mother of the winner had helped her daughter by humming the test piece, "Rockabye." while her child was nerformlne.

was alleged to ha\e offended was seated six rows back- from the stage and her humming could not have been heard bv her cnild Later the mother withdrew her complilnt

In Emerson Hall last night the senior edjudicator in the elocutionary section Mr F Clewlow heard the «ccond botch of the 24 te-ms entered for the one act p'ay and agpin he wai imprep,;ed with the work of the competitors Duiing the afternoon Mr Clewlow maoe the comment when juaglnp the \erse speaking under 12 that he vas struck by the promise of the competitors lather than their achievement People leadin, the child mind he said should hav» some acquaintance with the work they taught the children We are more than half way to real success In the childrens classes he added but they lune not yet developed enough rvthmic response There must be a little more response to the movement and there Is no need for the dull monotony of tone Later on in another section Mr Clevlow said that he hoped veise-speaklng instead of elocution had come to stay Elo-cution had had Its day but verse speaking would encourage a better standard of English in ordinary speaking

The second round of the A and B grade debates took place at the School of Arts Hall The finals are fixed for S°ptember 7

TO-DAYS PROGRAMME

The programme at to days three sessions will be \aried and many championships will be included Six halls will be used The second batch of the 95 competitors in the womens oratorio will be judged and the finals will take place on September 7 There will be more verse-speaking for jmeniles, mouth-organ juvenile and open championship, cello solo under l8 piano solo (restricted) under l8 bass \ocal championship open violin championship dramatic soprano cham-pionship piano championship under 21 and tenor solo championship In the evening at the Arts Club the second group of one

act plays will be juoged and at the Schorl of Arts Hall the second round of the B gr_«.e debate and the Impromptu speech (B grade) will be taken

The last batch of the 63 competitors in the womens operatic section appeared before Mr Haydn West in No 2 Assembly Hall in the evening and the first 40 of the 63 competitors in the men s operatic section were also heard
