ITALIAN TOURNAMENT.

ROME, April 21.

The Australian tennis players made a I successful debut at the Italian tennis cham' pionships.

j In the doubles. Crawford and McGrath

reeled off game after game as though it was , a practice match, against Canepele and

Dellavida, young Italians, who were nervous '' and failed to do themselves Justice. The

match in which Quist and Turnbull beat i the Belgian pair, Lacrolse and de Borman, [ yielded a good fight for the first set, with i the lead changing hands repeatedly, but once i* the Australians found their game they proved ! too strone all round for their opponents.

' Crawford showed good form in the mixed

doubles and was well supported by Mile. Aussem. Hopman and his partner proved f too brilliant for their opponents, who saved

several match points and were really unf' lucky In not being able to take the match. ' Quist and Mile. Payot, who played at the '? top of their form in their first match, cont tinued to play brilliantly in the second round, : taking the first set easily, but thereafter V they seemed to ease up.
