CAPTAIN COOK.
Memorial in England.
A memorial to Captain Cook, hewn from Victorian stone, and identical with that at Cape Everard, Victoria, has been set at Great Ayton, England, on the site where Cook's cottage stood before it was removed
to Melbourne.
The trustees of Captain Cook's landing place have received a souvenir brochure giving details of the English memorial. It bears two
brass tablets. One carries the inscription. "Lieutenant James Cook, R.N. of the En-deavour, first sighted Australia near this point
which he named Point Hicks, after Lieutenant Zachary Hicks, who first saw the land." The
other tablet explains that the memorial is a
facsimile of the one at Cape Everard, and that it has been made of stones hewn from the
rocks there.
