NATIVITY PLAY.

Sydney Players' Club

Performance.

Members of the Sydney Players' Club staged Mary D. Stock's nativity play, "Everyman of Everystreet" In St. James's Hall, Phillip-street, on Saturday evening;.

Despite a pretentious prologue of nebulous scientific outlook, the interest of the play Is wholly confined to the momentous events sur-rounding the birth of the Saviour at Bethle-hem. A sequence of striking tableaux showed Joseph and Mary wearily treading the road to the village, their rebuff at the inn, the newly-born infant In the stable, and the coming of the kings and shepherds with adoration and presents.

The performers were well cast, and those who had lines to speak acquitted themselves well. Laura West, as Mary, looked the ideal Madonna. An outstanding part was perhaps that of Cedric Kempson as Dives. The pro-cession of the kings through the body of the hall to the crib on the stage, with censer, torch, and train-bearers, was a dignified spectacle. The success of that final scene compensated for several very long and very dull intervals, when the musical amplifying unit proved fractious and disappointing.

Mr. John Appleton and his assistant pro-ducer, Mr. Harley Goodsall, were the pro-ducers. The play is to be repeated on

December 22.
