WOMEN'S SINGLES.

MISS JACOBS'S VICTORY.

In the final of tho United States women's championship at Forest Hills, Miss Helen Jacobs (U.S.A.), the defending champion, defeated Mrs. Helen Wills-Moody on Saturday, 8-6, 3-ß, and 3-0 default, after winning only five points in the first three games of the final set.

Mrs. Wills-Moody went to the Judges' stand and announced that she was unable to con-tinue. It was a dramatic but disappointing conclusion to one of the most spectacular matches In the history of the women's cham-pionships. Seven times previously they had met, with Mrs. Wills-Moody never losing even

a set.

The crowd of 7000 was wildly excited as Miss Jacobs crashed through in the initial set.

"My right leg kept botheilng me. I simply could not get to the ball," Mrs. Wills-Moody said afterwards. "There was no use rny con-tinuing, though I disliked very much to retire. Miss Jacobs was playing beautiful tennis, and

deserved her win."

Mrs. Wills-Moody was suffering fiom a spinal injury, which caused her to withdraw in the Wightman Cup several weeks ago. Her right leg, however, bothered her more than her back. She said she had also decided to withdraw from the doubles, in which she was paired with Miss Ryan, thus giving the title by default to Miss Betty Nuthall and Miss Freda James (Britain).

Miss Round's fine rally in the semi-final of the women's singles, to win the second set after trailing 1-4 and 3-5, was a feature of the match with Miss Jacobs. Realising her opponent's ability to handle her hard drives, she confined her play largely to chop strokes, which were effective throughout. Miss Jacobs played her best tennis of the tournament, while Miss Round was notably out of form.

In the semi-final of the doubles. Misses Round and Heeley made a determined stand In the second set after being easily handled in th- first, and they won four games in a row. Their strategy was to play to Miss Ryan Instead of Mrs. Wills-Moody, but the former's place-ments were deadly and made many points. Miss Hceley's hard drives and fast recovery of her opponents' offerings were a feature of the English team's play. Miss Round had but a brief rest following her singles match, and she appeared to be tired in the second set.
