APPOINTMENTS FOR WOMEN.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE HERALD

Sir,-Women will note with great approval the appointment of Miss Ida Leeson to the position of Mitchell librarian. Women are not often given high administrative posts in Aus-

tralia, where prejudice against them seems stronger than in most civilised countries.

But the satisfaction caused by this question being resolved in Miss Leeson's favour is tem-pered by the announcement that a new posi-

tion of deputy principal librarian has been created. Has this been done in order to block the appointment of Miss Leeson to the higher position later? Should the position of prin-cipal librarian become vacant the Mitchell librarian is the natural successor. We under-stand that this latter officer has hitherto acted as deputy principal librarian. Had a man been placed in charge of the Mitchell Library, would this new position have been created? There is no question of Miss Leeson's high qualifications and of her seniority.

I am, etc..

MILDRED MUSCIO,

President, National Council of Women of

N.S.W.
