HISTORY OF CITY FIRM.

More than 100 years ago-in 1823-Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Hordern founded the firm of Anthony Hordern and Sons, Ltd., In a small shop in King-street. The growth of the firm through the years has been intimately associated with the growth and development of Sydney itself. The history of the business makes fascinating reading in the current number of the "Hordernian Monthly"-the bridge commemoration number. The pages are profusely illustrated with photographs of old Sydney, and its way of life. The adver-tising section is very interesting. An adver-tisement appearing in the "Herald" of April 3, 1834, said to have been the first display advertisement to appear in any Australian paper, is reproduced. At the top of the ad-vertisement is a block of a bonnet, and the letterpress invites the public to inspect Mrs. Hordern's "splendid stock of ladies' and chil-

dren's Tuscan bonnets-"
