INTERNATIONAL CONTAINER.

The International Chamber of Commerce has published the list of awards made in connection with the container competition held in Venice on September 30 and subse-quent days. The models, entered by British, German, and Italian firms, were submitted to tests corresponding as far as possible to real working conditions. Water-tightness was tested by means of high-pressure hoses, re-sistance to weight and shock by lowering 12½-ton concrete blocks on them when fully loaded, and by dropping the containers from a height of 50cms. when overloaded by 2½ tons. A railway truck carrying a fully-loaded con-tainer was projected at 10kms. an hour against buffers to test the efficiency of the fasten-ings. Manufacturers require compliance with certain standard conditions in regard to size, fastening, and handling equipment to build containers for international trade. The In-ternational Chamber of Commerce is to draw up the necessary standards in conjunction with other interested bodies. In the closed rigid container section awards were made to Butterley Iron Works and the Gloucester Rail-way Carriage and Waggon Company, and the former firm also secured awards in the open rigid and open folding classes.
