KINGSGROVE-EAST HILLS.

RAILWAY OFFICIALLY OPENED

The Kingsgove to East Hills railway was officially opened at East Hills on Saturday afternoon by the Minister for Local Govern-ment, Mr. J. McGirr. There was a large gathering. The ribbon was cut by Mrs. Newey, wife of the chairman of the railway league.

The Minister said the railway would make it possible for city workers to live away from congested areas.

Major White said that when the Bankstown railway was opened there were only 28 scholars attending Bankstown school. Now it was one of the largest schools in the Empire, with 3500 scholars. He thought that the East Hills district, with railway communi-cation, would make rapid progress.

At the official luncheon at Padstow, Mr. Barr, proposing the toast of "Parliament and the Commissioners," said that the bill for the construction of the line was put through by Mr. Ball, when Minister for Works, about 5.30 a.m., when most of the members were asleep.

The toast was acknowledged by Mr. McGirr and Mr. Ball, Ms.L.A. Mr. Ball said that the railways' burden was heavy. Many of the lines were not paying. The people of the district were to be congratulated that the line had been completed, in spite of the de- pression. Before the work was started, it was expected that the line would pay from the start, but he did not know that it would

now.

Messrs. Mulheron and Nicholas acknow-ledged the toast on behalf of the Railway Department.
