ELLIS ROWAN MEMORIAL

PORTRAIT.

On Tuesday next at 3 p.m. Lady de Chair will unveil a portrait of the late Mrs. Ellis Rowan in the Blaxland Galleries at Farmer's. The portrait, which is the work of Sir John

Longstaff, is the first national portrait of a woman in Australia. People in every state have subscribed to the fund, and have been anxious to share in the honour paid to a woman of outstanding ability and high personal qualities.

Four years ago the Commonwealth Government purchased 952 paintings of Mrs. Rowan's of the flora of Australia and New Guinea, and of birds of Paradise. Miss Sarah Hynes, who was largely responsible for the purchases of these pictures for the nation, was also the hon organiser of the memorial portrait fund, and has acted as hon. secretary.
