OBITUARY.

REV. C. SPURGEON MEDHURST.

The Rev. C. Spurgeon Medhurst,, whose death is announced at the age of 67 years, had an eventful career. Born in England on March 28, 1860, he exchanged, at the age of 21, the study of law for the gospel, and in 1885 sailed for China as a Baptist missionary. About 1890 he visited the United States, where, after contending against Theosophy, in the Press and from the pulpit, he became converted to it. Some years later, at the invitation of Dr. Annie Besant, Mr. Medhurst worked for some time in Ceylon. He founded the Quest Society in China, and, later, entered the Government service in Pekin and assisted in compiling the Chinese Criminal Code. He came to Sydney with his wife in 1921, and was well-known in Theosophical and religious circles in this

State. Besides lecturing for the Theosophical Society, he was ordained to the priesthood of the Liberal Catholic Church. Mr. Medhurst resided at The Manor, Mosman.

The remains of the late Mr Medhurst were cremated at Rookwood yesterday, the Rev. L. W. Burt conducting the service in the chapel. A requiem eucharist will be celebra-

ted at St. Alban's Liberal Catholic Church, Regent-street, on Monday morning.
