MR. FRANK McELHONE.

The death occurred yesterday, after a long illness, of Mr. Frank McElhone, who was well known in banking and sporting circles in

Sydney.

The second son of the late Mr. John McEl-hone, M.L.A., he was born at Rushcutter Bay 59 years ago last month. He was educated at St. Kilda College, Woolloomooloo, now known as St. Aloysius' College. For years he was with the old firm of John Fraser and Co., merchants, of York-street. Then he joined the Australian Joint Stock Bank, and was with that institution when its name was changed to the Australian Bank of Commerce. Mr. McElhone retired from the bank 12 months ago owing to ill-health.

He was one of the original members of the Waverley Cricket Club, and helped to make the cricket ground in Waverley Park. For almost 40 years he resided in Old South

Head-road, Bondi.

Mr. McElhone claimed to be the original surf-bather of Sydney. Nearly 40 years ago, he, with a few others, entered the water at Bondi Beach. He was compelled to appear before the Central Police Court, and was fined 1/ for bathing in a public place. He always retained the receipt for the fine, and proudly claimed it as a certificate showing his bona-fides as the first surf-bather. Mr. McElhone saw Bondi grow from a couple of houses to its present size.

Mr. McElhone married a daughter of the late Mr. Edward Hordern, of Brickfield Hill, and is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter. The son, Mr. Eric McElhone, LL.B., of the Sydney University, is a mem-ber of the legal firm of Messrs. McElhone and McElhone. Alderman W. P. McElhone and Alderman Arthur McElhone are brothers.

The funeral will take place this morning from the Waverley Roman Catholic Church for the Waverley cemetery. The interment will take place in the family vault.
