? LINDRUM v. WILLIAMS.

" CHAMPION" TAKES THE LEAD,

Play in the match of 18,000 up level between Fred Lindrum, the champion, and A. E. Williams, the English player, was good on both sides in the first _i*-_i<m yesterday William, showed to advantage in an all-round break of 271. In it he gave samples of every variety of bill Urda, care of the hazard game, though he did not exploit, this to any extent. n_% was heartily applauded. Lindrum Kept to the top of the table throughout. In a two-century break he proved how Hoe. the ely the "postman's kick" cannon, in combination with the red winner, can be filled at "pot and play. Lindrum made breaks of 12 and 26. and Williams 172 and 173. 'The sessional scores were;

Williams. S, tO Lin drum. "a.0 1

In the evening Lindrum. playing in exceptionally good form, had it all his own way. In this was-ton he passed Wi Ilia ma at it, 44, and when the clock struck 10 be was leading by 414. He was playing a severe gamester, as one of the spectators remarked, "lined. out to win for all he can't He took no chances, for when in doubt he would always play Safety. William, did the same, and the tactical moves were well worth following. That they were appreciated was shown by the "pplague. But for the safety miser" and his neglect to use the rest Lindrum would have had a very fine average, for in consecutive visits to the table he made CS, "IS, and then, after two or three safety shots, 188. As it was he got the respectable average of 74. Williams had bad luck, and if he missed a few easy shots, this was only to be expected, seeing that for the greater part of the time he was playing the part of a looker-on. The principal breaks were:-Lindrum-2fiS, 15, "SS, 110; Williams-Sa, 00, 55, 01 (unfinished). The game

competition, which will be decided at the end this" week. Play will be resumed at 3 o'clock
