THE RAILWAYS.

Mr. F. K. ESLING'S RESIGNATION.

Mr. F. K. Esling, who was in the Way and Works branch of the Victorian Rail-ways department, and who was engineer-in-charge at Flinders street, has resigned his position. Among the many important works that Mr. Esling carried out were the building of the Flinders street viaduct, the new bridge over the Maribyrnong River, the Moorabool viaduct, and the complicated lay-out of the tracks at the Flinders street station and yards. The new Maribyrnong Bridge, which was built inside the old bridge without any interruption of the traffic was a fine piece of work that excited much interest in engineering circles. It is said that Mr. Esling resigned because

he did not consider that in the matter of promotion he had been fairly treated. It is also stated that there may be other de-velopments in connection with his resigna-

tion.

MURTOA-HOPETOUN DELAYS.

WARRACKNABEAL, Wednesday.-For some time people between Murtoa and Hopetoun have been complaining of the late running of the evening train on this line. It was hoped that a protest made by the Borung Council would result in some im-provement, but on Monday night the train was again two hours late. The trouble

occurs at Murtoa.
