WENTWORTH'S BIRTHDAY.

TO-DAY'S CELEBRATIONS.

To commemorate the 130th anniversary of William Charles Wentworth's birth a dinner will be held at the National Club this evening, when the Chief Secretary, Mr. C. W. Oakes, M.L.A., will give a review of "Went-worth, the Australian Patriot." Wentworth was born at Norfolk Island on October 26,

1793.

It is 51 years since Wentworth's death in England. His remains were subsequently brought to Sydney, and finally interred at Vaucluse on May 6, 1873. The vast attendance at his funeral was a striking testimony to the universal esteem in which he was held as explorer, scholar, and statesman.

At Vaucluse Park to-day there will be a celebration at which the Lieutenant-Go-vernor will preside, and addresses will be delivered by prominent speakers, including members of the Government. The park trus-tees, through the Education Department, of-fered prizes for an essay on Wentworth by children under 16 years from every school in New South Wales. The results are now known, and the awards will be presented by Sir Wil-liam Cullen this afternoon.

The above photograph is of a painting of Wentworth in his prime, which Mr. H. Bee-croft, portrait painter, has just completed, and presented to the trustees of Vaucluse Park, to be hung in the Constitution room of the his-toric house. The painting will be on view to-day.
