MILITARY PROMOTIONS.

Mr and Mrs. Ellis-Stewart, of Prahran, have been informed that their son. Alan B. Stewart, now in France, hasbeen promotedSergt.-Major. Mr. A. B. Stewart was formerly in the Victorian Scottish Regiment.

Mrs.E.H. James, of 174 Riversdale road, Haw- thorn, has received a cable message, stating that her husband has been promoted to captain. Cap-tain James is a son of Mr. James, formerly secre-tary to the Education department.

Mr R G Parker, of "Restdown", Locke street, Essendon, has received word that his eldest son, Harold Carlyle Parker, has obtained his commis-sion at Salisbury Plains, England, after completing his course through two schools - Raglan Barracks, Devonport, and Aldershot. He is an old pupil of the Essendon State school.

A young Kerang townsman, F. F. Whitelaw, who last year, as a corporal, accompanied reinforce-ments for the 14th Battalion, has been promoted to the rank of second lieutenant. At Pozieres he came under favourable notice by assuming, on the field, the responsibilities of a platoon commander, and leading his men during four days' continuous

fighting.

been promoted to lieutenant on the field in France.
