DEATH OF MR. CHRISTIE.

FORMER SERGEANT-AT-ARMS.

Tho death of Mr Wlllliam Sydney Christie at his home at Ashfield early yesterday morn- ing closed the career of one of the best known figures in Parliamentary life in Sydney for some years past. Mr. Christie, who was in his 60th year, was a native of Sydney, having been born at St. Peters. He was the son of the late Mr. W. H. Christie, who for years carried on pastoral pursuits in Queensland, afterwards coming to Sydney, where he started business as a surveyor

Mr. Christie was educated at Newington College during the time the late Dr. Howe was headmaster. Leaving school at the age of 17, he spent the next few ycara travelling about the country in company with his father. Tiring, however, of a roaming life, he re-turned to Sydney in 1885, and on, October 14 entered the Chief Secretary's Department. Tho following year Mr. Christie went to Par-liament House, and in 1904 was appointed second clerk assistant of the Legislative As-sembly. Five years later, on the retirement of Mr. L. J. Harnett, he was appointed ser-geant-at-arms of that chamber, and held the position until his retirement in 1918. Mr. Christie was a keen sportsman, a capital horseman, and a fine quoit player.
