NEW RECTORY.

ST. JOHN'S, ASHFIELD,

The foundation stone of a new rectory In the parish of St. John the Baptist, Ashfield, was laid by the Archbishop of Sydney on Satur-

day afternoon.

Dr. Wright was welcomed by the rector, Rev. W. G. Hilliard, M.A., and the parish coun-cil, and marched in procession with the church choir and local and visiting clergy from the church to the site of the new building.

Archbishop Wright said he was glad that they had taken in hand a new rectory, al-though no doubt they parted with the old with mingled feelings. The old rectory had its associations, beloved with the memory of rectors who had lived in it, rectors who were honoured, and would always be honoured. Some people were not always considerate, and many thought the work of the clergyman was of the easiest. In fact, it was the hardest, because it was never finished, and was a continual strain. Therefore, it was important that he should be provided with a home in which he could rest and find that communion of spirit to strengthen and enable bim to go out and work again.

Subsequently those present were entertained at afternoon tea by the ladies of the parish, when tho rector announced that tho amount of the offerings placed on the stone was £173/4/6. On behalf of tho parish council, Mr. F. G. Grant asked the Archbishop's ac-ceptance for Mrs. Wright of a pair of in-scribed sliver vases.

The new rectory is being erected In the church grounds, at the corner of Bland and Julia streets, at a cost of £2500.
