SUBMARINES.

BEITISH TRANSPOET

SUNK

OFF MOROCCAN COAST.

LONDON, Dec. 7.

In reply to a question in 'the House of Commons, Mr. H. ,T. Tennant (Under-secretary for War) stated that the Wood-field, 3584 tons, was torpedoed by 'à sub-

marine off the Moroccan coast on Novem-ber 23.

The military casualties wero six killed and 14 wounded. ,

FRENCH SUBMARINE LOST. ***

The Press Bureau announces that, accord-ing to Germ,.n wireless, the French sub-marine Fiwiel was destroyed on Sunday by nn Austrian warship. Two officers and twenty-six men lire said to have been taken prisoner.

A Vienna communique says: The Warediner destroyed the Frcsnel in the region of San Giovanni di Medua (17 miles south-east of Scutari).

AMERICAN STEAMER FIRED ON.

The American oil-tank steamer Petrollte was attacked In the Mediterranean by an Austrian submarine. One American was wounded. The submarine withdrew when li discovered the Petrollte's nationality.

OIL STEAMER TORPEDOED.

It Is reported from Rome that the Standard oil tank-steamer Communipaw, with 10,000 tons of oil from Genoa ki _Jexandrla, was torpedoed and sunk by a sub-marine near Tobruk (on the coast of Tri-poli). A search for survivors has been fruitless.

EXCELLENT RESULTS.

The "Central News" Rome correspondent says the hunt for submarines In the Medi-terranean has yialdod excellent results, and their danger is believed to have vir-tually passed. The latest steps taken by the Allies are' likely to prevent submarines penetrating the Mediterranean.

BRITISH OFFICERS ARRESTED.

An Athens message says:-"A German submarine at Messina boarded a Greek steamer and arrested Colonel Napier, Mili-tary Attache at Sofia, and Captain Leslie Wilson, M.P.

Captain Wilson had been carrying de-spatches for months. It has been ascer-tained that the papers taken from him were unimportant.

Austrian submarines on December 2 narrowly missed the Spetzia, which stop-ped. Then the submarines ordered tbe Spetzia to lower a boat. Officers came aboard and conducted a search, despite the captain's protest that it was a breach of international rights. During the search several mailbags wore thrown overboard. The submarine's officers promptly found Captain Wilson and Colonel Napier, and took them aboard the submarine. A British Red Cross officer was permitted to continue his voyage, being bound to Piraeus from Messina,

[Captain Leslie Orme Wilson, D S.O., was A.D.C. to the late Sir Harry Rawson when the latter was Governor of New South Wales from 1903-9. In 1909 he married Miss Winifred Smith, daughter of the late Captain C. Smith, of New South Wales. Captain Wilson is Unionist member for Reading in the House of Commons.

AUSTRIAN NAVAL CLATMS.

A Vienna communique says:-"The cruiser Novara and several destroyers operating off San Giovanni di . Medua, on the 5th, sank five steamers nnd several sailing vessels« discharging war material. A land battery of 20 guns heavily bom-barded the Äustriau flotilla, but without result.
