STATE ELECTIONS.
PREMIER AND MINISTERS

The dominant note about the State elections on Saturday, was the lack of excitement, go far as the metropolitan seals were concerned The day passed off without incident.
On this occasion the voting was compulsory, but there was nothing to indicate an unusual rush at the polling booths. There
were 10,000 additional votes on the roll. - When the House was dissolved the strength of the parties was.- Liberals, -17; Socialists.! 24; Independent, 1. Candidates were returned I unopposed for eight sents Liberal. I:
Socialists, 0; Farmers' Union, issue that C41
sents remained to be contested on Saturday.
A Socialist candidate fell from his chair in a paralytic seizure during the morning, and died in hospital a few hours later.
All electorates are now practically complete, with the exception of the postal vote. In a couple of instances there are a few
Isolated returns to come.
Mr, Thomas Joseph Ryan, leader of the profemininity party at the elections, was born at Port Fairy, Victoria, In 1879. He was educated at the Jesuit College, Kew, and South Melbourne College, at each of which he held a scholarship. He graduated Bachelor of Arts at Melbourne University with honours in classics. He was appointed assistant classical master to Melbourne High School, and subsequently resident classical master of the Church of England Grammar School in Launceston. Later on he went to Maryborough (Queens-land) was classical master of the Grammar
School.
While In Melbourne he studied law, graduat-ing a Bachelor of Laws in 1901. He says admitted to the Queensland Bar, and entered politics for Barcoo in 1809, defeating Mr. George Kerr, formerly Minister for Railways. With the exception of Mr. Tolmie, Minister for-, Lands, and Mr. Rankin, Minister for Railways, the whole of the Ministers have been de
ferried.
On the present figures Mr. Barnes, Treasurer, IS FULL behind his opponent. Mr. Doughis, hon. Minister, Is 200 behind. Mr. Grant, Home Secretary, is in a minority of 100, which, II 18 thought, he will not make up. Mr. G. H. Mackay, Liberal member for Gympie, has lost his seat. Mr. Blair, Minister for Education, who had as an opponent Mr. Gledson, secretary of the Miners' Union, is now 306 In the rear. Mr. James Allan, the firm of Allan and Stark; Brisbane has lost his Bent In the Kurilpa division.
In the Musgrave sent, the Minister for Agri-
culture's (Mr. White) constituency, the prop sent position is Armfield, (Socialist), 1303; White, 1246. The task of making up the deficiency is not hopeful. The Premier, Mr. Denham, is 274 behind his opponent, Mr. Jones, of the firm of Foggitt, Jones, and Co., Brisbane; and the Premier's sent is regarded
as last.
