AUSTRALIA DAY.

QUESTION OF DATE.

Mr. Holman on Saturday made available correspondence which has recently passed be-tween him and the Premier of South Australia with regard to the Red Cross movement for

Australian soldiers.

On May 27 Mr. Holman sent the following telegram:-"Government propose undertaking big united effort to raise funds throughout the States for benefit wounded Australian soldiers and generally Red Cross purposes. Full par-ticulars scheme available shortly. Can we count upon your co-operatlon? Hope have op-portunity next day or two discussing matter with you personally."

To this Mr. Crawford Vaughan replied: "This Government will be glad to co-operate with your Government in effort in raising funds for wounded Australian soldiers and Red Cross purposes. Kindly advise us to details.

The South Australian Premier followed this

up with a telegram dated June 9, as follows: "Regarding proposed National Day for collec-tlon benefit returned soldiers, is it definitely fixed for July 30? Wattle Day, probably August 28, is celebrated here as 'Australia Day.' Could another name than 'Australia

Day' be applied to July 30?"

Mr Holman reiterated his statement made the other day that no date had yet been fixed for Australia Day.
