A NEW STEAMER.

---<>---

The trial trip of the steamer Tamban, which

took place on the harbour yesterday after-

noon, was a success.

This vessel, which is the pioneer of the Macleay River Co-operative S.S. Company's

(Ltd.) fleet, was specially designed for the Macleay River trade. She was built by Messrs. Morrison and Sinclair, Balmain, and is con- structed of Australian hardwood. She has a length of 145ft, a beam of 30ft, and a depth

of 10ft. On her two runs over the measured mile, her mean speed was 11 knots. Provi- sion has been made for a large cargo capac- ity in two hatches, and her cargo-handling gear is capable of lifting up to seven tons.

Messrs. Wildridge and Sinclair installed the machinery, which is of twin-screw com-pound service design, with cylinders and boiler of modern type.

The vessel is fitted with refrigerating ma-chinery and a cold storage chamber, with a capacity for 1000 boxes of butter.

The Tamban will take up the running of the company's chartered steamer Hastings, which is to be overhauled. She leaves on her maiden trip to the Macleay River at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
