QUEEN VICTORIA MARKETS.

That municipal "white elephant," the Queen

Victoria Markets building, has for many years

been a serious drain on the City Council's

resources, and various schemes have been put forward with the object of turning it

into a payable proposition. It is not likely now that anything will be done in this direc-tion till after the war. A recommendation has been made by the finance committee of the council that with regard to the question of remodelling the building or of leasing the premises for extended periods, the matter be allowed to remain in abeyance, and that all deposits lodged with tenders for leasing be

returned.
