REPORTED MASSACRES IN THE ISLANDS.

INQUIRIES TO BE MADE.

In the Senate to-day Senator Pearce asked whether the Government had received any report as to the alleged massacres of upwards of 40 natives at different times during the last six months at Cloudy Bay, on the South Coast of Papua—of massacres of natives on the Gulf of Papua, and on the track from Port Moresby to Kokoda.

The Vice-President of the Executive Council stated that no information had been re-ceived, but inquiries would be made as to the truth of the allegations.
